An Unforgettable Experience: Cattle Judging Course at JacMar and Stefmar Simbras
JacMar and Stefmar Simbras once again hosted Klerksdorp Hoërskool agricultural students for their annual cattle judging course, held at the Farm Ysterspruit. Under the expert guidance of judges Jaco Maré, Kobus Bester and Orgie Maré, students gained hands-on experience and valuable knowledge in evaluating cattle. Since its inception, this course has been a resounding success, introducing students to the fundamentals of cattle judging, regardless of their prior experience.
The course began with a warm welcome and an introduction to the basics of judging both male and female animals. Students worked with top-quality cattle, each learner assessing and classifying the animals independently. Their evaluations were later compared to those of the expert judges, who also emphasized the importance of explaining the reasoning behind placements rather than the placements alone.
One of the key learning areas was the correct use of terminology, a critical aspect of effective judging. Through detailed lessons provided by the judges, learners were taught how to apply precise terms to the right animals, a skill that greatly improved their understanding and scoring potential.
After hours of focused work in the sun, the Maré’s ensured that students were well cared for with high-quality meals, refreshing drinks, and snacks to keep their energy up. These small comforts made the day even more enjoyable and allowed learners to remain focused.
Each session concluded with feedback from the judges, who shared insights and tips to help students refine their skills further. This feedback allowed learners to identify areas for improvement and deepened their understanding of the judging process.
JacMar and Stefmar Simbras commitment to nurturing young agricultural minds is a testament to their dedication to the industry. Klerksdorp Hoërskool students left with valuable skills, cherished memories, and a newfound appreciation for the art of cattle judging.
