On the 2nd and 3rd of March, the Simbra Society held a beginner’s course for the Central University of Technology (CUT). Mr Phillip Viljoen was kind enough to host us on his farm outside Bloemfontein. The course took place over two days. The first day begins with a theory session wherein the genetic and phenotypic aspects of cattle selection are discussed, this is followed by an afternoon of practical selection of cattle in the Kraal. We received some heavy rain after the first day, which presented some challenges the next morning – the busses could not make it up the farm road. Mr Viljoen was kind enough to arrange one of his tractors to transport students up the road through the mud. Once everyone had arrived, the second day began in the Kraal and students were allowed the opportunity to fine tune their selection skills.
